Daniyyel Ironside is a multidisciplinary artist and researcher whose work is concerned firstly with the exform - characterised by unceasing aesthetic, narrative, and structural subversion. The exformal draws relationships between things into heightened tension, manifest in Ironside’s work as zones of indiscernibility, co-affectation, or seeming contradiction; the intimacy of the artist’s hand, the severity of graphic rendering; the co-fading of figure and ground, the specificity of repeated motifs; the particular, personal, universal. Ironside’s project is less one of  fragmentation than constellation, with audiences made sensitive to their participation in meaning-making by the aerials of exformal disjunction, establishing a vulnerablised context for poetic and affective encounters.

Whilst their practice spans a variety of mediums, Ironside’s artwork is grounded in the most rudimentary - graphite drawing on paper. They see the simplicity of their work’s material structure, the immediacy of their hand, and the high degree of technical craft, as means of soliciting critical responses more readily than standard “anti-retinal” works; this whilst tying themselves to histories of conceptualism, minimalism, and of course, drawing (the latter of which we’ve all contributed to, if only as kids and daydreamers). Drawing opens us up, as artists and audiences, to the Other drawing or drawn - even the realisation that what looks like a print has been produced by hand shocks us with anOther’s sudden presence. Ironside understands these effects as vital to their project, the exform having as much to do with our relation to one another, as between ourselves and our respective, subjective worlds.
